in search of a North-West Passage between the Continents of Asia and America. Including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook. ... 2 vols. London: G. Robertson, J. Sewell, and J. Debrett, 1784. 8vo. Half calf over original marbled paper boards. Complete with both half-titles, folding engrv. map (repaired & slightly defective), and 21 full-page engrv. plates. Some marginal annots. in Vol. 2, otherwise a fine and complete account by the surgeon's mate, Ellis. Despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage (and Cook's death at the hands of the natives at Hawaii), Ellis, who was in financial straits, sold his narrative to a London publisher for 50 guineas, thus earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks. Ellis's narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast of America, and Hawaii. Beddie 1601.
